Alaska Scenic Tour 009

DAY 1 - Anchorage, Alaska

Arrive Anchorage, Alaska. Overnight in Anchorage hotel room and tax included. Explore Anchorage on your own as time allows. Unguided and meals at own expense.

DAY 2 - Turnagain Arm / Portage Glacier / Alaska Wildlife Center

An incredibly scenic drive along the Seward Highway and Turnagain Arm on the way to the coastal town of Seward. There are several wildlife viewing possibilities en route - and we take ample time to stop and observe.

Tour the Alaska Wildlife Center, a wild game park that cares for orphaned or injured wildlife. After checking into our Seward accommodations, enjoy dinner and time to relax or explore the town. (L,D)

DAY 3 - Alaska Sealife Center / Kenai Fjords Wildlife and Glacier Cruise

Start the morning with a tour of the Alaska Sealife Center, a $56 million project towards study and restoration of Alaska’s marine wildlife. Next, we’ll take a Kenai Fjords wildlife cruise to see abundant marine animal and bird life along with tidewater glaciers and Seward’s scenic coastal line. Your sure to see otters, sea lions, eagles and other marine bird life. Watch for whales and calving glaciers. (B,L,D)

DAY 4 - Mat-Su Valley / Musk Ox Farm / Hatcher Pass

This morning we’ll travel back along Turnagain Arm, stopping en route for wildlife viewing. Visit the Musk Ox Farm for a look at the descendants of the Woolly Mammoth. Explore the high mountain pass known as Hatcher Pass. A short nature walk and a tour of the Independence Gold mine offers sweeping views of tundra, jagged mountain peaks and valleys. Tonight we’ll enjoy dinner in a mountain top lodge before checking into our Wasilla accommodations. (B,L,D)

DAY 5 - Matanuska Glacier and River activity choice / Palmer Colony House

The day begins with a scenic drive along the Matanuska River, through canyons and mountains, to the river’s point of origin, a massive glacier nestled in the mountains of high country. The Matanuska Glacier is one of the very few in Alaska you can walk right up to and even hike on!

Choice of Included Activity - Choose One

* Nature Walk - enjoy a short walk with views of the glacier and surrounding wilderness.

* Glacier trek - Join a guided trek that is a great introduction to glaciology, geology and natural history.

* Scenic Matanuska Float trip - Enjoy a scenic float and watch for wildlife visiting the riverbanks.

* Lion’s Head Whiteater Rafting - Lion’s Head begins near the face of the glacier where the flow is squeezed through canyon walls creating several miles of great fun. Hold on for the ride through Class II and IV whitewater - excellent for first timer’s trip!

Tour the Palmer Colony house for the history of the 1935 land settlement act and pioneers who settled this fertile valley. Enjoy dinner in an Alaskan family restaurant . (B,L,D)

DAY 6 - Sled Dog Kennel Tour / Talkeetna / Denali

Today we travel to Denali, en route we stop and tour a veteran Iditarod mushers kennel to learn about this favorite sport of Alaskans and the 1150 mile sled dog race to Nome. Visit with the dog team and love some puppies before a short ride in a wheeled cart behind a team of huskies. Our travel continues north, with a stop in Talkeetna, a rustic town with incredible views of Denali. Time is allowed to explore this little town with big Alaskan flavor - diners, artists shops, quirky museums and a walk to the river to view Mt.. McKinley. There are also optional activities offered (see below). We continue travel to Denali, stopping for wildlife or scenic views before checking in to Denali accommodations. (B,L,D)

Optional Activity Day 6

• Flightseeing Denali: Fly over lush valleys and enter the Ice Age world of the Alaska Range through the great gorge; fly deeper into the park over massive glaciers and wind-sculptured ridges for the best views of remote regions of the park. $210 per person

DAY 7 - Denali

Today is a great day to choose your favorite Denali option. Short nature walks into the park, sled dog presentations and touring the new Visitor Information Center at the Park Headquarters are accommodated. Or, you may simply choose to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of your accommodations. For those seeking a more active day, optional activities are offered below. (B, L, D)

Optional Activity Day 7

• Nenana River rafting from Wild to Mild: Take the popular Canyon Run and journey 11 miles through Denali Park frontier on exciting class III to IV water. Or choose a Scenic Wilderness float along the boundaries of Denali National Park. $80 per person.

DAY 8 - Denali National Park & Preserve

A full day excursion into the park allows plenty of time to explore. Denali exemplifies interior Alaska’s character as one of the world’s last great frontiers for wilderness adventure. Today’s highlights are the amazing scenic and wildlife viewing. Enjoy the theatrical entertainment of Cabin Nite Dinner theater. Foot stompin’ music and all you can eat salmon barbecue. (B,L,D)

DAY 9 - Alaska Railroad Goldstar

Early morning shuttle to the train depot where you’ll board the Alaska Railroad to Anchorage. A double deck, domed railcar offers first class service. This luxury dome car includes complimentary appetizers, panoramic views and an outdoor viewing platform private for goldstar guests. This full day train ride arrives in Anchorage at 8:30pm. Anchorage hotel accommodations - room and tax included. (B)

DAY 10 - Depart Anchorage. Alaska

Unguided day. Hotel shuttle or taxi to airport.
