Alaska is BIG. When superimposed over the continental US, all four border points touch. Southcentral Alaska is home to over half of Alaska's population. Alaska is 570,374 square miles, 1/5th the size of the lower 48. Alaska's population is about 622,000 people. The road system allows easy access to a playground within nature. Numerous activities and attractions are offered from the coastal towns of Homer and Seward, to the frontier town of Talkeetna. The Interior is home to the continent's tallest peak, MT. McKinley and early Athabascan Indians. Denali National Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations for wildlife viewing. The Far North is home to the Inupiat Eskimos, a rich gold rush history and life above the Arctic circle. The Inside Passage is generally traveled via cruise ship, scenic coastal landscapes in a rainforest climate. Southwest Alaska is renowned for Brown Bears and Brooks Falls. There are no roads or train systems connecting Southeast and Southwest Alaska.
Many airlines travel in and out of Anchorage. Alaska airlines is the main carrier for travel within the state. Small plane or jet boat operators are used to reach more remote areas. Alaska Marine Highway also is used to travel between coastal communities.
Alaska's larger towns have medical facilities, banking and other traveler services.
Alaska time zone is one hour later than Pacific Time.
Alaska will honor a valid driver's license from any state or country for 90 days after entry.
Seat belts are required by law. All children under the age of four, regardless of weight, must ride in a federally approved child safety seat while traveling in Alaska.
Anchorage is Alaska's largest city.

The key to comfort in Alaska is layer your clothing and be prepared for one season colder than that in which you are traveling. Alaska is informal so casual wear is welcomed and common everywhere. Wearing layers will keep you warm and allow you to peel off in case it heats up. Synthetic or wool fiber garments are warmest, cotton is not a good choice. The items below are recommended for your personal comfort. Keep in mind any scheduled activities that have special needs.
-
- Layered clothing - from short sleeves and shorts to sweaters and long pants Weather conditions change, many micro-climates exist within a region. Casual dress is appropriate.
- Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots if you are taking a guided glacier trek
- Rain jacket & pants - light weight and breathable is best.
- Light - Medium weight jacket - a lined wind breaker is ideal. Autumn Tour - dress warm .
- Warm socks - synthetic or wool, not cotton. Trekking socks are ideal.
- Warm cap and light gloves - for cooler regions and higher altitudes, or ladies with cold hands.
- Sunglasses - especially on the glaciers and water
- Sunscreen - especially on the glaciers and water
- Insect repellent
- Camera
- Film
- Day pack - to carry extra layers or personal needs on a daily basis.
- Motion Sickness medicine - when taking a cruise, if in doubt - it will make the difference between a good and bad day without question.
