Alaska PreCruise Adventure 006

DAY 1 - Anchorage, Alaska
Arrive Anchorage, Alaska. Overnight downtown Anchorage hotel. Hotel
room and tax included. This day is unguided, meals at own expense.

DAY 2 - Matanuska Glacier Trek/ Hatcher Pass / Independence Gold Mine
Start with a scenic drive along the Matanuska River, through canyons and mountains, to the river’s point of origin, a massive glacier nestled in the mountains of high country. The Matanuska Glacier is one of the very few in Alaska you can walk right up to and even hike on! Join a guided trek that is a great introduction to glaciology, geology and natural history.
Explore hatcher Pass, a high mountain pass of exceptional beauty with walking trails that give way to views of wildflowers, alpine meadows and the Valley below. Summit lakes and waterfalls are azure blue and an incredible sight. The historic Independence Gold Mine offers a glimpse into gold mining’s past.
Dinner and overnight Wasilla lodgings. (L,D)

DAY 3 - Talkeetna / Flightsee Denali / Sled Dog Kennel Tour
Today travel to Talkeetna, a rustic town with incredible views of Denali. Explore this little town with big Alaskan flavor - diners, artists shops, quirky museums and a walk to the river to view Mt.. McKinley.
Experience the thrill of flightseeing Denali. Fly over lush valleys and enter the Ice Age world of the Alaska Range through the great gorge; fly deeper into the park over massive glaciers and wind-sculptured ridges for the best views of remote regions of the park. On the return trip stop and tour a veteran Iditarod mushers kennel for a short film and presentation about this favorite sport of Alaskans and the 1150 mile sled dog race to Nome. Visit with the dog team and the newest members - the puppies, before a short ride in a wheeled cart behind a team of huskies.
(B,L,D)

DAY 4 - Knik Glacier Tour /Whittier
Take an airboat tour to Knik Glacier to watch crystal blue icebergs floating quietly in the serene Knik Lake. You won’t find any crowds here - just spectacular glacier viewing. A short stop at glacier camp (a gravel bar across from the face of the glacier) allows opportunity to explore a little terrain, watch for eagles overhead, or sheep and bears on the mountain side.
After lunch we head south towards Whittier. The scenic drive along the Seward Highway and Turnagain Arm includes several spots for possible wildlife viewing. We take ample time to stop and observe as we make our way to the town of Whittier where you depart mainland Alaska by cruise ship. (B, L)
